Among all the colored gemstones in the world, few inspire as much debate — and desire — as the Padparadscha sapphire. Its name comes from the Sinhalese word for the lotus blossom, and its color is just as delicate: a soft blend of pink and orange that seems to glow from within.

What Color Qualifies as Padparadscha?

This is where it gets interesting. There is no single agreed-upon definition. The color must sit between pink sapphire and orange sapphire — never too strongly one or the other. The finest examples show a salmon or sunset hue that shifts subtly depending on the light source.

Major gem labs like GRS, Gübelin, and Lotus use slightly different language on their certificates, which is why two stones with similar colors can have different descriptions depending on where they were tested.

Why Sri Lanka Produces the Best

The vast majority of fine Padparadschas come from Sri Lanka — specifically from the Ratnapura district, a region that has supplied gemstones to the world for over 2,000 years. The combination of geology, alluvial deposits, and gem-quality corundum in this region is virtually unique.

At Fareen Gems, we have direct access to Sri Lankan miners and cutters, which means we can source these stones at the rough stage — before they enter the broader market.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Certification is essential. A reputable lab report from GRS, Gübelin, or Lotus confirming the color as Padparadscha is what protects your investment.
  • Unheated commands a premium. An unheated Padparadscha with a strong color is extremely rare and commands significantly higher prices than heated alternatives.
  • Color consistency matters. The stone should show its signature salmon tone in both daylight and incandescent light. If it looks too pink under one and too orange under another, it may not qualify.
