When you buy a natural gemstone, the certificate is often as important as the stone itself. It is your proof of authenticity, your record of origin, and your protection when it comes time to resell. But not all certificates carry the same weight — and understanding the difference can save you from expensive mistakes.

The Top Labs and What They’re Known For

GRS (Gem Research Swisslab)

GRS is one of the most respected labs in the world for colored stones. They are particularly trusted for sapphires, rubies, and spinels — and their “no heat” or “no indications of heating” statement on a report is considered the gold standard for unheated stones. GRS is widely recognized in the US, Hong Kong, and Middle Eastern markets.

Gübelin Gem Lab

Based in Lucerne, Switzerland, Gübelin is one of the oldest gemological laboratories in the world. Their reports are known for their scientific depth and high prestige. A Gübelin report on a fine ruby or sapphire adds significant collector value to the stone.

Lotus Gemology

Lotus, based in Bangkok, has become highly respected in a short time — particularly for their detailed origin and treatment reports on sapphires and spinels. Many dealers in the trade consider Lotus reports to be among the most reliable and transparent available today.

What About GIA?

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) is the most recognized name in diamonds, and their colored stone reports are accurate and trustworthy. However, for high-value colored stones, the trade generally prefers GRS, Gübelin, or Lotus for their more detailed origin and treatment analysis.

Which Certificate Adds the Most Value?

For the US market where we primarily sell: GRS and GIA carry the most name recognition with buyers. For high-end collectors and auction houses, a Gübelin report can command a premium. Lotus is increasingly accepted and respected, especially for spinels and fine sapphires.

At Fareen Gems, all our significant stones come with reports from one or more of these major labs. If you have a preference for a specific lab when purchasing, let us know — we are happy to discuss.
